Thomas Blodgett who immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635 was born on 18 November 1604, a year after the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England. He was born at Haughley, in the parish of Stowmarket, Suffolk, England the son of Robert Bloggatt and Mary Whitlock/Witlock/Whetlock. He married Susannah Thompson in 1628 at Stowmarket, Suffolk. Their children were: Robert born 1629 in Haughley, Suffolk and died 4 May 1632 in Haughley; Nathaniel born 28 Feb 1628 in Haughley, and died 8 May 1630 at Haughley; Daniel born 14 May 1631 at Haughley, Suffolk. He died 28 Jan 1671 at Chelmsford, Massachusetts colony (see Chapter 4 for history of Daniel’s line); Samuel born 12 July 1633 at Haughley (see Chapter 5 for history of descendants of Samuel Blodgett); Susanna born June 1637 in Cambridge, Massachusetts colony. She died 6 February 1697 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; Thomas born in Cambridge, Massachusetts colony and died as an infant on 7 August 1639 in Cambridge.
Thomas Blodgett acquired land in Cambridge and the town records state that he sold,
    1) in 1638 to Robert Daniel a tract of land on the westerly side of Garden Street
    2) in 1639 to Elder Frost an estate on the westerly side of Dunstan Street, between Harvard Square and Mt. Auburn Street. This was possibly his homestead.
Cambridge, Massachusetts records show that Thomas was Sworn a Freeman, and allocated land on 6 Mar 1636. Chapter one of this history has provided background information on “freeman” an initial and essential step for a colonist to attain, and a prerequisite to land ownership. The London Custom-house records gives verification of Thomas Blodgett as a “conformitee to the Church of England” however we know that he changed his church affiliation. As has been stated in chapter one in the section on Rev. Thomas Shepard, the ancient records of the Shephard Memorial Church as Cambridge Massachusetts bear the name of Thomas Blodgett as one of its original members, “as gathered in Rev. Thomas Shepard’s company.” It appears that some ambiguity exists regarding Thomas’ church affiliation from the above two sources of information. However one can assume that in England he was a “bona fide” Anglican, or that his spouse was, or both were, and when he came to the Bay colony, where a strong Puritan influence was in place, he became a convert to Shepard’s congregation because of true beliefs, and/or because it was advantageous to do so as a citizen, and business man in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It has been stated in chapter one in the section on civic offices and titles, that in order to be sworn a Freeman, one had to have a church membership, and Thomas was a sworn a Freeman as stated above from the town records. Thomas Blodgett died in Cambridge, 7 August 1642, only seven years after coming to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His will dated 10 September 1641 and probated in 1643, was signed by Thomas using the spelling “Blogget”.

Thomas heiratete Thompson, Susannah in 1628 in Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, Großbritannien. Susannah wurde geboren geschätzt 1607; gestorben am 10 Feb 1660 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. [Familienblatt] [Familientafel]
