Arthur ‘Art’ Emil Haefner passed away at Mobridge Regional Hospital on March 6, 2015. Art was born May 31, 1927 on a farm north of Glenham, South Dakota to Christ and Margaret [Schultz] Haefner. Thirteen days later, the family moved to a farm north of Timber Lake, SD. Art attended grade school at the country school north of Timber Lake. In 1940, his freshman year of high school, they moved into Timber Lake. They moved to Mobridge in 1941.
Funeral services for Art Haefner, 87 of Mobridge, were held Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at Kesling Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Greenwood Cemetery at Mobridge, SD under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
Art worked for Travis Food Market delivering groceries when he met Ruth Baer. He delivered to 12 grocery stores and 4 meat markets. Art and Ruth were married Oct. 2, 1948 at Selby, South Dakota making their first home in Mobridge until August 1956, when they moved 20 miles southwest of Mobridge, onto the Grover Hand Ranch, located in Dewey County.
Art Haefner enlisted with the Air Force at the end of WW II serving from 1945-1947. In 1946, he was stationed in Okinawa for one year. He was discharged in 1947 as a Private 1st Class in the 196th Infantry Division with the U.S. Army. He worked for John F. Hand at Hand Transfer between 1947 and 1948 then reenlisted in 1950 with Headquarters Battery, 216th AAA Group, U.S. Army and was stationed for a short time at Ft. Richards in Anchorage, Alaska, during the Korean War. He was discharged as a Corporal in 1952 and went to work on the Grover Hand Ranch for a year, then drove as a salesman for Standard Oil in Mobridge. He and his family all moved to the Hand Ranch in 1956.
Art’s inspiration was his kids. He wanted twelve, but was content with six. One year the carnival was in town and Art offered the kids a few hours at the carnival or they could use the money to build a go-cart and have years of fun. He along with the boys built the go-cart which they called “Mama’s Nightmare.
One thing he really liked to do was fish. One day he took a large tractor tube and tied a canvas to the bottom and a board across the top to sit on. He found a paddle, pushed it into the dam, and then paddled out into the middle of the bass dam to fish. No life jacket on and he couldn’t swim. One day he took Yvonne, Bonnie, Dave, Jennifer and Jessie fishing and he didn’t get to fish as he was too busy baiting the hook. Every Father’s Day the kids would gather to help Dad brand the calves. Other hobbies were hunting, playing pool, whist, picking and playing his guitar and the electric piano and traveling to visit his kids. Over the years he and Ruth traveled to Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, Minnesota, California, Oregon, and Washington to visit his kids and his brother Johnny.
Throughout their lifetime Art and his wife Ruth cared for 22 foster children. Art and Ruth joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in April, 1960 where Art served as elder and deacon.
In Nov, 1984 they moved into Mobridge at 708 4th Ave West. A hail storm in 1985 destroyed all the grass at the ranch, forcing Art to sell what remaining cattle they had and thus he retired. He continued to work for various farmers around Mobridge and also did carpentry work.
