Homer was one of thirteen children. He had six brothers and six sisters. He was born on the northeastern Montana farm homestead of Konow Knute and Emma Buskerud Bondy, his parents. The homestead was located approximately seventeen miles north of Frazer, Montana. Family story is that Homer Curtis Leland (HCL)was jokingly referred to also as High Cost of Living by his father Konow. Homer was married and divorced from Marilyn Feldner Wirth, and then was married to Mildred Patricia McGough Wallace on July 29, 1970, in Reno, NV.
