Our dad, David Haight, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2013, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center due to complications of a stroke.
Dad was born March 15, 1933, in Kooskia, to John J. Haight and Vena D. (Nicholson) Haight.
Dad went to various schools due to his dad being in construction and working on several of the dams in the Northwest. He graduated from Nyssa, Ore., High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army April 8, 1953. Dad was stationed at Fort Lewis and was honorably discharged April 8, 1955. His entire life was spent doing things for others without giving it a second thought.
After his military career, he returned to Kooskia and started working at Twin Feathers Mill, which later became Potlatch Forests Inc. When PFI closed, Dad and Irene moved to Lewiston where he was employed by Fidelity Blue Mountain Escrow.
Dad married Jacqulyn LeGresley, Aug. 14, 1954, in Kooskia. They were later divorced. On May 15, 1982, Dad married Irene Hochhalter McCoy in Cottonwood. Irene passed away Sept. 21, 2010.
Dad spent most of his childhood summers in Kooskia living with his sister, Vera and her husband Did Stadtman, working at various jobs. He delivered groceries for Mulledy's Groceries and helped Did with various odd construction jobs. His fondest memories were the adventures with Vera and Did, including going to Glendale, Ariz. Dad's greatest adventure after high school was going with two friends down to California for great things. They made it to his sister Muriel's home in San Jose, Calif., and then they decided to come home. Their big adventure was over.
Dad enjoyed hunting and camping. He would take us kids to the mountains and we would ride motorcycles for hours on end. Of course, we always wanted to go to Red River Hot Springs so we could spend time swimming. Lots of camping with family, excursions to Wild Horse Lake, Buffalo Hump, Magruder Corridor, and Lookout Butte; Lil' Egypt was a favorite spot. Of course, the family was made up of the Reeds, the Beckmans, the Schwartz boys and the LeGresleys.
Dad and Irene took their camper and Vera and drove the Alcan Highway. Joining them was nephew Jack Chamberlin and wife Cary and Dad's sister Lela Pickens. They had quite the adventures. One of dad's wishes was to keep traveling and that he did until health issues started creeping in. He and Irene took a trip to Hawaii for his retirement and really enjoyed the week. Dad also took Irene, Vera and Lela on an Alaskan cruise and got teased for traveling with his harem.
One of Dad's other favorite things was having pets and he always had them. As kids, we always had dogs, cats, tropical fish, sea monkeys and we even had an incubator that we hatched a baby chick in. One of Dad's favorite stories was the time he rode the bus from Kooskia to Coulee Dam with chickens in a box; he was taking them home to Mama. The bus broke down and they had to spend the night in Spokane and a kindly old lady took him under her wing and helped him take care of the chickens and get back on the bus.
Dad could play the accordion and piano, not by reading music, but by ear. He and the Reed boys would play for hours and we would love it. He wouldn't play the piano when anyone was around because he wasn't "good" at it. We would be really quiet if we heard him playing so he wouldn't stop.
After Dad's first stroke, he spent time in Lewiston Rehabilitation and Care Center and then the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston. He enjoyed playing bingo and black jack, but his very favorite was when the Old Time Fiddlers would come and perform. He would sing right along with them and he knew all the words to the songs. He was a pretty easy keeper, not complaining and rarely asking for help. He had his "favorites" and kept candy for all visitors to help themselves. Dad and Irene leave behind their children Karen Hendren, Terrie and Gary Wemhoff, Sandy Vandeventer, Mike and Meredyth Haight, Jan Thornton, Steve and T.J. McCoy, Gary McCoy and Patty; 17 grandkids; 27 great-grandkids; and two great-great-grandkids. Also surviving are his sisters, Lela Pickens and Ruth Davidson. They were preceded in death by four sisters, three brothers and three grandchildren.
Dad and Irene will be buried together at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery with a private burial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Idaho State Veterans Home at 821 21st Ave., Lewiston, ID 83501. Please sign the online guest book, Book of Memories, at www.mtviewfuneralhome.com.
