After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1933, during one of the worst years of The Great Depression, he got a job dipping leather shoe laces in fat. His father got him an interview at Eng-Skell restaurant supply, and he went to work for them for $60-$65 a month, and continued to work for them until his retirement. On his way to work each day in San Francisco, Norman watched the Golden Gate Bridge being built, from 1933 to 1937.
Sometime after he met Edith in Boulder Creek, on October 30, 1938, they were parked on Highway 9 and were listening to the radio when the dramatization of œThe War of the Worlds with Orson Welles broadcasting came on. Norman was already a science fiction buff by then and recognized it as a story by H.G. Wells, so did not panic, as did many others who listened.

His parents were sweethearts in Wales and emigrated to the U.S. separately, then married in New York. In the 1900 census, he was working as a salesman and living as a boarder on Bush Street in San Francisco. As a salesman for Selig Brothers Clothiers, he would go to lumber mills, fit the lumbermen and sell them clothes. He met Norma while walking down Central Avenue in Boulder Creek past her house. When he registered for the WWI draft, he stated he was of medium height and build, with brown eyes and dark hair. His brother-in-law, Fred O. Moody, registered him at the draft board.
He was a jolly, good natured person, who smoked a big cigar. One day when he arrived home on the train, he got off, went down to Å“the Junction" & jumped in the water with all his clothes on. He then took off his wet clothes & had his swimsuit underneath. His daughter Betty was mortified and ran home! During his last months he would ask his wife, Norma, to play "When You and I Were Young, Maggie," on the Victrola as he rested in the parlor.

June (24) and Betty (20) were teaching at the local grammar school, and her younger three children were attending school. She was not employed at the time, and owned her own home on Central Avenue, which was valued at $2,000. There were no house numbers in Boulder Creek at the time. Sometime later, Norma worked at the local country store (Waters) to support herself and her children. She was also a member of the local school board.

John became a ward of the Orphans Court in Anne Arundel County, MD, after the death of his father. An Anne Arundel County guardianship record indicates that Henry Whalon (Whalen) was appointed guardian of John Gore, orphaned by his father, Henry Gore, on April 20, 1826 (John would have been 7 1/2 years of age). Oral family history indicates the guardian spent all the money (there was only one accounting on file in the courts, so this seems to bear this out). Oral family history also indicates he was in the Baltimore Blues Militia. On August 1, 1838 (John was almost 19), he was appointed as 2 lt 4th Infantry, Maryland, by President Martin Van Buren. He was twice breveted (Aug and Sept 1847, Captain and Major, respectively) for gallant and meritorious conduct in the War with Mexico. He was a good friend of Gen. Grant's; served in 4th Infantry with him & shared living quarters in Detroit, MI, in abt 1850-1852 w/Lucy, Grant, & Grant's wife Julia. In the August 1850 census, John was 31, Lucy was 24, and son James was just a year. John died of cholera after crossing the Isthmus of Panama with the 4th Infantry (per one Grant biographer, he keeled over while playing euchre with Grant and was dead by morning). He died on the steamer Golden Gate in Panama Bay off Flamenco island. “Some reports say that Grant disposed of the dead by burying them on Flamenco Island. Other reports say that he disposed of the bodies by weighting them down with cannonballs and throwing them in the ocean. Per his affidavit and 1840 census, b. 1819 (undoc info says 01-Mar- 1816, which must be incorrect). ajor WI Newton of Norfolk was a career officer with the U.S. 2nd Dragoons, forerunners of the U.S. Cavalry and served in Florida, Mexico, and various Western posts. He served in the Seminole Indian Campaign, Mexican and Civil Wars and died of disease contracted through exposure. As an officer, he was sent to study cavalry tactics at France's Saumur Cavalry School about 1838-1839. Accompanying him were General William J. Hardee (commander of the Army of Mississippi) and Captain Lloyd J. Beall (later, the only commandant of the Confederate Marine Corps). œThe officers were to complete the course of instruction offered at Saumur in one year and, upon their return, were to introduce French practices into the American service.
In 1867 and 1868, he and his wife toured parts of North Europe and Africa and were accompanied by their daughter, "Nina" (Cornelia). Part of the reason for the trip was for Major Newton to renew contacts with calvalry officers he had known at the Saumur Calvalry School. A letter from his wife to their daughter "Bessie" (Elizabeth) written from Algiers in 1868 indicates that Nina spent part of her time there sewing a "walking suit."

In 1847 "Wash" and wife Emily Lynn left for California. They crossed the plains with his brothers Daniel and Barton. He was one of the few whites, 40 in all, who came to California from Jackson Co., Mo., in l847, father-in-law James Lynn being one of them and the captain of his company. This company came thru Colorado, Utah and Nevada and on Sept 12, 1847, they halted at where Stockton now stands. (more to follow from sketch of Thomas F. Moody).
In 1860, Wash and his family were living next door to his parents, John and Polly, in Fremont, Santa Clara, California. Washâ„¢s brother, Daniel, was living with him, along with other farm laborers.

In the 1830 census, James was living in Warren Co., KY (he was a state representative), with two sons under 5 (these would be John and Joseph), a daughter between 5 and 10 (Lucy), his wife (Susan A. 1 PLAC ancestry.com.Petunias (a restaurant in the French Quarter of New Orleans) is housed in a 3 story Creole Townhouse erected in the 1830's by Barthelemy Bacas, a noted cabinetmaker of the time. The interior is especially fascinating for his mastery of intricate details of the all cypress millwork including the mantels surrounding the original coal-burning fireplaces. Mr. Bacas lived in the residence until his death in 1864, probably from apoplexy, when Union officers moved into the widow Grimma's house across the street during the Civil War when New Orleans was an occupied city. His daughter (Felicie) then lived there another 8 years, except for a 10 month period in 1871 when reconstruction carpetbaggers reigned in Louisiana.
There is a B. Bacas Listed in Plaucheâ„¢s Battalion, La. Militia in the War of 1812. Also, a Leon Baca in 5 Regâ„¢t., La Brancheâ„¢s La. Militia.

The 1840 census lists the B. Bacas household in New Orleans consisting of one white male aged 10 - <60 (Barthelemy), and the following œfree colored persons: one female 55 - <100 (Adelaide Beaulieu); two males under 10; three femals 10 - <24; three males and one female 24 - <30.
The New Orleans Death Index states that Adelaide Pouponne was 72 years old when she died on 12/24/1855 (Bk 14, Page 382). The index also indicates there is another Adelaide Beaulieu, who died on 3/26/1844 (Bk 10, Page 269) at the age of 51. Several other Beaulieu names are listed in the index.

According to his death certificate filed in New Orleans Parish, Charles was born in "San Domingo" (now Haiti), where French Creole was spoken. Many French were forced to flee Santa Domingo during the Black Rebellion of 1793 and settled in New Orleans; his family might have been among them. Additionally, Acadians from San Domingo began arriving in Louisiana in 1864; the last group of Acadians to arrive in New Orleans was a small group who were among the 10,000 Saint-Domingue (Haiti) refugees who arrived in New Orleans in the fall of 1809.

In 1859 John and Mary Moody's son Daniel returned to Missouri and brought his parents to California. One source states that John was born in Virginia & became a planter. He came to Kentucky, then to Missouri; finally,to California 10 years after George Washington Moody arrived there. The Moodys came from England and settled in Virginia & had a creditable part in the Revolutionary War. John ranched and operated a livery stable in Santa Clara. He was a member of the Christian Church and was a strong Democrat.
In 1830, John and his family were living in Montgomery County, Missouri. James was one of the first explorers of the far northern country and established the trails over which so many thousands found their way to the coast. They crossed the plains with Washâ„¢s brothers, Daniel and Barton. James was one of the few whites, 40 in all, who came to California from Jackson Co., Mo., in l847. This company came through Colorado, Utah and Nevada and on Sept 12, 1847, they halted at where Stockton now stands. (more to follow from sketch of Thomas F. Moody).
James effected the first sawmill in Santa Cruz; mined for gold in Hangtown; and built the first redwood house in Santa Clara.
In 1860, James and his third wife were living in San Jose, California, with two children from his first mariage: Thomas M. and Mariah Lynn, and with six children from Louisaâ„¢s first marriage.

œTrained as a lawyer and having no other source of income, John Stanly followed his father™s example and launched his career by a judicious marriage. his bride was Elizabeth Franck, or Frank, whom one old New Bernian described as œa country heiress without cultivation, or opportunity .. [who] inherited from her father, Martin Franck, large estates in Jones County which laid the foundations of Mr. Stanly™s prosperity.
He was a Federalist U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1801 and 1803 and again between 1809 and 1811. He was educated by private tutors before attending Princeton University. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. In 1802 John Stanly Jr. killed in a duel ex-Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight, age fifty-five, over political views. Each man used a one-shot flintlock pistol. Each man reloaded and fired four times. Stanly had a bullet in his coat collar. On the fourth shot, the ex-Governor was killed. Spaight's descendants lived in the Stanly house in later years and neighbors claimed that "Ghosts" stalked through the house."
When his fatherâ„¢s estate was divided, the family home went to John, and he and his wife, Ellizabeth Frank Stanly, lived there for many years with their children.

Living next door were Adam Cluck and his wife, who had a young family.In 1840, in Jackson County, Missouri, Johnâ„¢s household consisted of himself (60 - <70), a female (probably Judith, 50 - <60), and another female aged 20 - <30. William T. Lynn served in the War of 1812 and in the Missouri Rangers under Captain David Musick of the U. S. Mounted Rangers. He came to St. Charles County Missouri 1800 and purchased land there.
William was killed on the Dardenne by Sioux Indians near Fort Cuivre. He had gone from the fort œto the edge of the woods to visit a whiskey jug which he had concealed there, when the report of several guns was heard. Lieutenant Massey quickly went out, suspecting that the Indians were making an attack.. They had crossed the river below in their canoes and shortly appeared on Cap au Gris rock on the opposite side of the river, where a young Indian warrior only 12 years old flourished Linn™s (sic) scalp, (and) hallooed in the Saukee language, ˜Come here, you Americans, and we will serve you in the same way!™ Linn™s family at the time lived in Wood™s fort.

John Haun, a German, was among he first wave of pioneers of the great western expansion, arriving in 1799 and settling nearby the future village of La Charrette. In 1807 a schoolhouse was erected and John Haun, as well as new village landholders Bryan and Callaway, enrolled their children. However, children of the original French families of La Charrette Village would not attend. At the time of its founding, La Charrette Village School Number 1 was the westernmost school in existence on the Missouri frontier.
He applied for a land grant in 1799 (patented Dec. 9, 1833 - Survey #288). There are records at the Missouri State Historical Lib. (in Columbia) in the Pa. Archives of Hauns coming to the U.S. on the Ship Neptune on 9/30/1754 from Rotterdam. They were apparently German.
In 1817, he is enumerated in the Femme Osage census, along with his sons Jacob, Peter and John Jr. Also enumerated are the Boone, Bryan and Callaway families and that of Joseph Moody.
In the 1830 Montgomery County, Missouri, census on the same page are listed: John Haun, James Lynn, Daniel Lynn, James Moody, Peter Haun, Jacob Haun, John Moody; on the following page Isaac Lynn is listed.

.œWhen he was thirty, a chance visit to North Caroline introduced John Wright Stanly to Ann Cogdell, daughter of one of new Bern™s leading families, and he footloose entrepreneur decided to marry her anad settle down.
John Wright Stanly settled in New Bern, North Carolina in 1773 after failing in a business venture in Honduras. (He had been put in jail in Philadelphia in 1772 for bad debts). He prospered after settling in Craven County, and built a house in New Bern that cost $20,000. This house still stands as a public library and showplace. He was a patriot who contributed money for munitions in the Rev War. It was said that the Army would not have been victorious at Yorktown but for his financial support.
When a yellow fever epidemic swept over the town in 1789, John and Ann were among its victims. Within a month of each other, they were buried side-by-side in the cemetery of Christ Church, NC.,

James Blackshear, son of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear, became the father of James Blackshear, Jr., who was killed by Tories during the Revolutionary War. He along with his cousin Martin Franck had been appointed by the governor as lieutenants of troops to be raised in defense of the Province. Shortly thereafter they were captured by Tories, and each was tied to a stake and shot to death. The Blackshear family intermarried with all of the Chinquapin Chapel families, including Franck, Huggins, Stanley, and Koonce.
John Martin Franck, a German but not from the Palatinate, came to America in 1709, on the same ship with Philip Mueller and his family, who were from the Palatinate section of Germany. Franck, then a mature scholar of 27 years of age, fell in love with Jacob Mueller's young daughter, Civilla, (sometimes listed as Sevil), she was but 17 years of age and too young for marriage, so we have a case of the old love story, "he waited for her". Among their issue was a daughter, Catherine, who married first, Hardy Bush and had issue, after the death of Bush, Catherine married James Blackshear. The location of the Franck settlement was quite near to the location of the Alexander Blackshear settlement, a few miles from New Berne, (now Newbern, N. C.) the Blackshear-Franck community was then known as "New Germany.",

Nathan and Hannah Lynn resided on a farm of 336 acres in Redstone, Fayette county Pennsylvania until December 28, 1778 when they sold the property and with several other families moved to near Harrodsburg Kentucky. This area of Kentucky was very dangerous at that time and the few settlers in the area were under constant Indian attack, Nathan Lynn was killed by the Indians as he defended Fort McAfee. Nathan Lynn's date of death was recorded in a Bible owned by a descendent . This Bible was printed in 1829 and the genealogical data from it was copied in 1935 by Robert Lynn.

In 1765 James Turner and wife Kerenhappuck (sic.) sold their dwelling and former residence with 100 acres of land to William Lightfoot. This was described as the land Isaac Norman gave James Turner, 1733, on his marriage to Isaac's daughter Kerenhappuck. According to their descendants, they moved to Halifax County, Va. Kerenhappuck Norman Turner was a heroine of the Revolutionary War. A monument erected in her honor stands in Guilford Battlefield Park, Guilford, North Carolina. The History of the Morehead Family tells of her organizing the hospital corps after the battle of Guilford Courthouse and of how she found her grandson on Guilford battlefield and nursed him back to health in the New Garden Quaker Meeting House. In her old age, she is said to have spent much time with her daughter Sarah on Little River in Richmond County, N.C. She rode horseback and hunted with her grandsons. It was on one of these hunts that she was said to have been thrown off and her neck broken.

John Hutchings (1691-1768), a son of Daniel Hutchings, a mariner, and a grandson of John Hutchings of "Pembroke Tribe" Bermuda, succeeded George Newton as mayor of Norfolk and was again mayor in 1743 and 1755. He is buried near the south gate of St. Paul's Churchyard. He was one of the eight men who became Norfolk's first aldermen in 1736, typical of solid citizens who were responsible for the town's pre-Revolutionary prosperity.He was a member of the Sons of Liberty; wounded and taken prisoner in Princess Anne County while serving with the militia.,

One of the council of the province,n 1699, James Bowles, the only son and heir of Tobias Bowles, a prominent sugar and tobacco merchant of London and Kent, came to the Maryland colony to serve as his father's factor and agent. Well educated, well connected and wealthy, Bowles began accumulating large parcels of land in St. Mary's County, including a parcel called "Bowles Preservation" that would one day be Sotterley Plantation. He died in Maryland circa 1727.. He was nominated, but not confirmed, for governor after the death of his Uncle John Seynour.The General Index to Wills of St. Maryâ„¢s County, MD, lists his will, June 13, 1727. He left property to his daughters Elinor, Mary, and Jane and paid off his Uncle Georgeâ„¢s debt.

The Baylors came to VA from Tiverton, Essex Co., England. "It is said that the family had earlier migrated from Hungary." He was member of the House of Burgesses from Gloucester County in 1693, and from King and Queen County in 1718.
John BAYLOR/Lucy TODD had an unnamed son "whose fortunes we have no means of following." (6a) The BAYLOR family of Essex originated with the unnamed s/o John BAYLOR/Lucy TODD. There is also a tradition that the Essex family descended from another Robert BAYLOR, an uncle of John BAYLOR who m. Lucy TODD. (6) It is probable that Robert BAYLOR of King and Queen Co. from whom the Essex family is descended was the younger son of John BAYLOR/Lucy TODD. In addition to tradition, reference in the public records indicate a close connection between the family of Col. John BAYLOR of Newmarket and that of Col. Robert BAYLOR. [NOTE: If the 1710 birth date of son Gregory is correct, then Robert is probably the same generation as the John BAYLOR that m. Lucy TODD, since John's son John was b. 1705. However, the estimated birthdates of Robert's other children is in the mid 1720's. He could be son of John/Lucy if he was born around 1706 and son Gregory's birthdate is incorrect. If Hannah GREGORY's father was born 1682 or later, Hannah was probably born not much earlier than 1702, and Gregory not much before 1718/20. Richard was perhaps the leading Whig of his community during the period just prior to the Revolutionary War. During the course of the war, he was Judge of the Admiralty Court for Port Beaufort in 1776. He was a member of the legislature from Craven Co in 1778-79 and postmaster at New Bern.
 He was a Colonel in the Revolutionary Army and led the troops which drove the last British Governor out of New Bern. It is said that he entertained George Washington when he visited New Bern.

Andrew Lynn (father of Col. Wm. Linn), Å“was brought to this county from Ireland by his parents, in the year 1701, when a child at the breast; and the family settled on the Muskonekonk (Musconetcong Creek) in New Jersey. . . There, (Andrew) when he grew up, married, raised six children -- two daughters, names not recollected, one of them married a John Polk & emigrated to Carolina, to the neighborhood or region of Mecklenburg -- then (Andrew Jr) .. born in 1732; then Col. Wm. Linn, born in 1734; then Nathan born in 1736; & the youngest Col. Wm. Linn Benjamin, born in 1738. These children, raised on a frontier, had but very limited opportunities of education. Andw. Linn, the Elder lost his wife, and subsequently, about 1750, emigrated with his family to the western frontier of Maryland, near where Fort Frederick on the Potomac was subsequently erected about half way between Hancock and Hagerstown, about 3 miles below Licking Creek. With Andrw. Linn, came his brother Thos. Linn and family. During the French war, Thos. Linn was killed by a party of Indians, who scalped his son Thomas and took captive his son Isaac and carried him off to the Delaware Towns; Captain John was the leader of the Indians --- Isaac was not over 10 years old when taken and kept 12 years before he was restored to his people. Thomas from the effects of being scalped, went blind and lived many years, without ever recovering his sight.
Andrew Linn, the elder, in his old age went to Kentucky, to the home of his youngest son, Benjamin, on Green river, where he died in 1800, aged one hundred.

He was an earnest supporter of the Established Church - the Communion silver now used at Old Abingdon, the parish of "Fairfield," was presented by Lewis Burwell, and has "L.B." engraved upon it. He was an influential member of the King's Council; "Fairfield," later known as "Carters Creek," was said to be the oldest house in VA bearing a date on its walls, the incription "L.B.A., 1694," was cut on one of the group of diamond-shaped chimneys, which shows that "Fairfield" was built by Hon. Lewis Burwell and his wife. [Col. Families]
Six of Major Lewis Burwell™s 15 children preceded him in death. In this time, a large number of children was expected and, llike the death of mothers, was accepted as the will of Providence.Nathanial Bacon™s will dated March 15, 1691-2 : Gives to œMajor Lewis Burwell all my lands lying and being in New Kent County to be managed sold and disposed of to the best advantage and the proper use and benefit of the said Lewis Burwells four daughters viz. Joanna, Elizabeth, Lucy and Martha now living.
œBy his death in 1710, the Burwells had forged instrumental alliances with members of the rich and powerful Armistead, Bacon, Bassett, Berkeley, Byrd, Carter, Cusis, Digges, Harrison, Lear, Ludwell, and Parke families.
Little is know about Lewis II. Presumably either his mother or the first of two stepfathers, William Bernard, a member of the colony™s council, arranged for Lewis™s schooling. [He] served as a trustee of the College of William anad Mary and tried to instill a love of learning in his sons. The eldest, Nathaniel, was in England in 1705, where he may have been sent for schooling. Lewis provided in his will for his two younger sons, James and Lewis, to get educations ..
